Our June general meeting was a wine tasting held at Barsotti Wines in the Strip District. The owners, Joe & Ruth Barsotti, treated us to a diverse selection of wine and food parings. The offerings varied in price and countries. Prior to the start of the evening, Joe showed us his small, but well stocked, storage area. Most of the wines are from smaller family-owned wineries that he and Ruth visit throughout the world. Some of the wines they get are limited production with the total number of cases ranging from a few hundred to maybe a few thousand.
In order as they were served, we tasted Prosecco from Northern Italy, 2014 Sauvingnon Blanc from Loire Valley in Western France served with Asparagus wrapped with Prosciutto. 2013 Malbec from the high altitude region of the Andes Mendoza, Argentina served with Chimichurri pork tenderloin. 2010 Rioja, North Central Spain served with Marcona almonds, Spanish olives, and a young Manchego cheese. 2013 Cent’Are Nero d’ Avola from Western Sicily, served with Lamb meatballs and eggplant sauce. The last offering was a 2010 Late Bottled Vintage Port from Northwest Portugal, served with Blue cheese and Rosemary Cookies.
The prices ranged from $15.00 - $36.00. All the tasting and paring s were well matched. Those of us in attendance were very pleased with the informative seminar that Joe and Ruth provided. In all there were 9 regular members, 2 guests, and 1 Junior Member. Thank you Chef Bello for your work in setting up the tasting.
